Are Your Google Ads Eating Up Your Budget Without Results?

Updated: Dec 10, 2024

Here’s How To Fix Common Mistakes From Mango&Wild

Google estimates that Google Ads delivers an 800% return on investment (ROI) while 85% of clicks on all Google Ads campaigns come from Google Shopping Ads, showing just how effective Google ads can be to run your business but maybe you're not seeing the results you want?

Are you frustrated with Google Ads not bringing in the conversions or leads you expected, while your budget seems to vanish quickly? You’re not alone. Many business owners find that a few easy-to-miss mistakes are costing them both time and money. Mango&Wild are paid ads specialists with over a decade of experience and are here to help you identify and fix these issues to get better ROI on your ad spend.

Here are four simple adjustments you can make to improve your results and maximise conversions.

Overusing Broad Match Keywords

Using broad-match keywords might seem appealing, as they reach a wide audience. However, this can lead to your ads appearing in irrelevant search results, which quickly eats up your budget.

Solution: Opt for phrase match or exact match keywords instead. These types allow for more precise targeting, ensuring your ads reach high-quality leads who are more likely to convert. Think of it as refining your search to connect with the right audience.

Read the Mango&Wild Blog here on the different keyword types and implementing them into your campaign.

Choosing The Wrong Campaign Type

Did you know that Google Ads offers eight different campaign types? Sticking with just Search ads means missing out on opportunities to reach audiences across Shopping, YouTube, Maps, and more.

Solution: For eCommerce businesses, we recommend trying Performance Max campaigns, which leverage Google’s multiple channels to get your products seen in relevant places. For other types of businesses, we recommend testing Performance Max alongside your other campaigns such as search and assessing how well it converts for your unique offer. Depending on your budget you may also want to consider other campaigns like display but you can understand the different types of Google Ads campaigns you can set up in this blog.

Skipping Negative Keywords

If you’ve seen clicks coming in from searches that aren’t relevant to your business, you may be missing negative keywords. Adding these signals to Google which search terms you don’t want your ads to show up for, preventing irrelevant clicks and saving your budget for the right traffic.

Solution: Add negative keywords to filter out irrelevant search queries. This is especially helpful for avoiding traffic that won’t convert, allowing your budget to focus on potential customers who are more likely to engage with your business.

Ad schedules running 24/7

When setting up your new campaigns or when running Google ads your ads are set to run 24/7 however you can imagine from this you could be wasting clicks and budget. Often when we also have a lower budget we want to maximise this in a shorter time period to get the most bang for our buck so again but adjusting our ad schedules to when we know our audience is shopping will help us get the most ROI.

Solution: Think about your audience and when they shop. Also, look at your Google ads data and adjust your ad schedule to when you see you are getting conversions. Play around with different ad schedules until you find what works for you. It could be that your ads run for a few hours in the morning, turn off for bit and turn back on in the evenings when people are shopping. This will help maximise your budget at key times of the day.
